Compare fees, interest and the repayment schedule with an unsecured option if one is available. Check the default and recovery terms. Do not assume a payment problem can be resolved simply by handing over the asset; obligations depend on the contract and applicable rules.

• Ask about insurance, registration or account restrictions during the term.
• Get the default, recovery and release conditions in writing.

Do not assume giving up the asset ends every obligation. Ask how sale proceeds, charges and any remaining balance would be handled under the contract and applicable rules.

No. Compare actual offers, including fees and term, rather than assuming collateral produces a better price.
