Open a panel cover and the breakers are not all the same size. Some occupy a single position, some span two, and some are half-height with two switches in the space of one. Each shape corresponds to a different job.

A single-pole breaker connects to one bus bar and delivers 120 volts. That covers lighting, general receptacles and most small appliances. It is the default, and the one most panels are mostly full of.

A double-pole breaker spans two adjacent positions because it has to connect to both bus bars at once. A residential service brings in two hot legs that are 240 volts apart from each other, and appliances like ranges, dryers, water heaters and air conditioning compressors need both. The two halves are tied together with an internal bar so that a fault on either leg disconnects both, which is why you cannot make a 240 volt circuit by installing two separate single-pole breakers and pushing the handles together.

Tandem breakers, sometimes called duplex or half-height, put two independent 120 volt circuits into one physical slot. They are not a licence to keep adding circuits indefinitely. Panels are rated for a maximum number of circuits, and the manufacturer designs specific bus positions to accept tandems while the others physically reject them. The panel label shows which positions qualify.

Trying to force a tandem into a rejecting slot, or filing down the rejection feature, defeats a safety system that exists because a panel's bus, main breaker and enclosure were tested for a defined circuit count and heat load.

There are also quad breakers, which occupy two slots and provide either two 240 volt circuits or a mix, used where space is tight and the panel is listed for them.

When a panel genuinely has no legal capacity left, the answer is a subpanel or a service change rather than creative use of the slots that remain.

Mixing manufacturers is the other thing to watch. Breakers from one brand will sometimes physically clip onto another brand's bus, and there are a small number of genuinely cross-listed combinations, but most such pairings are not tested together. The panel's own label lists the breaker types it was evaluated with, and that list is the authority.
