Wet room installation has gone from a specialist request to a mainstream option in about a decade, and any bathroom fitter in Bournemouth now does more of them than they did five years ago. The appeal is obvious - a clean, contemporary, open-plan space with no shower tray, no enclosure, and often more usable floor area than a traditional bathroom of the same footprint. But wet rooms are not the right choice for every home, and understanding where they work and where they do not saves an expensive mistake.

The essential difference is waterproofing. A traditional bathroom has water contained in a shower cubicle or a bath, and the surrounding walls and floor only need to be splash-resistant. A wet room turns the whole floor and lower walls into a shower zone, and the entire area has to be tanked - fully waterproofed with a bonded membrane before any Tiling and finishing goes on. Cutting corners on the tanking is what causes wet rooms to fail, and when they fail they fail catastrophically, with water finding its way into the ceiling below over months before anyone notices.

Floor construction matters more than most homeowners realise. A wet room on a solid ground floor is straightforward - the concrete is levelled, the tanking membrane goes down, and a drain is set into the recessed area for the shower. A wet room on a suspended timber floor is a bigger job, because the joists have to be strengthened or notched to allow the shower drain and its trap to sit below the finished floor level. That work is not impossible but it adds cost, and it is one reason ground-floor wet rooms are cheaper than first-floor ones.

Drainage is the technical challenge that a good installer plans early. Water has to run downhill to a drain, and the drain has to connect into the existing soil stack. In modern homes with plenty of pipework space this is easy; in older Bournemouth properties, especially Victorian and Edwardian houses with limited floor voids, the drain position is dictated by where the pipes can physically run. Some layouts simply cannot accommodate a full wet room without significant structural work, and any fitter worth using will tell you that on the first visit rather than promise you what you want and discover the problem halfway through the job.

The advantages of a wet room, beyond looks, are practical. There is no shower tray to leak. There is no cubicle door to accumulate mould and limescale. The whole floor is easier to clean because there is nothing raised to work around. Accessibility is another factor - wet rooms are the natural choice for anyone with mobility issues, because there is no step to negotiate. Many households now specify a wet room in a downstairs bathroom specifically to future-proof the home.

The disadvantages are worth being honest about. A wet room turns the entire bathroom into a wet zone, which means the toilet, basin and any storage are all in a room where water may be present. Everything from the toilet roll holder to the paint on the walls has to be chosen with that in mind. In busy family bathrooms, splashing from an open shower onto the floor and walls can leave the room damp for longer between uses than a traditional design.

The right answer for most households is neither purely traditional nor purely wet-room but somewhere between - a walk-in shower with a low-profile tray, a glass panel rather than a full enclosure, and the rest of the room laid out conventionally. That gives most of the aesthetic and cleaning advantages of a wet room without the technical complexity or the risks of a full tanked floor.a black and white bathroom with a large mirror
