Upon ultraviolet excitation, excitons, or electron energy propagated through a microtubule farther and for longer duration than predicted by classical mechanisms, indicating a quantum effect. We then showed the presence of two different anesthetics, isoflurane and etomidate, significantly inhibited the TFL exciton propagation time and distance (Kalra et al, 2024, Figure 4). Microtubules are the best-supported target for unitary anesthetic action, and Orch OR the best supported theory of consciousness. In the mid 2000s, anesthetic binding and action were systematically approached by the Eckenhoff lab at the University of Pennsylvania. In a series of studies they found binding of radiolabeled halothane to 70 different proteins in mouse brain neurons, half in the membrane and half in cytoplasm including ‘tubulin’ in microtubules (Pan et al, 2007). They then employed genomics and proteomics to show altered tubulin gene expression persisting several days post exposure, suggesting a functional role for tubulin in anesthetic action (Futterer et al, 2004; Kalenka et al, 2007).
