Redoing a garden is one of those projects where the gap between the vision and the outcome is larger than in almost any other home improvement. Photos on social media and in magazines make it look effortless: existing garden goes in, beautiful new garden emerges, everyone is happy. The reality involves choices, compromises, and a lot of decisions about levels, drainage, planting timing and long-term maintenance that rarely appear in the finished photograph.

The first decision is the honest one about how much time you actually want to spend maintaining a garden. This shapes every subsequent decision more than aesthetics do. A high-maintenance garden with detailed borders, formal hedges and complex planting looks stunning but demands fifteen to twenty hours of work every month between April and October. A low-maintenance garden with mature shrubs, established ground cover and a well-designed hard landscape needs perhaps four hours a month across the same period. Both can be beautiful; they are just fundamentally different types of garden, and choosing the wrong one for your available time is the classic mistake.

Levels are the first design question is the first practical design question, and one that transforms both look and function. Many Bournemouth gardens have a slight fall from the house to the back boundary, and rather than fighting it with steps and retaining walls, a good design works with it - the terrace or patio at house level, a middle zone for lawn or planting, and a further zone at the back that can become a more secluded seating area. Trying to level everything into a flat plane is usually expensive and rarely looks better than working with the existing contours.

Drainage across the whole garden needs thinking about, not just in the paved areas. Modern gardens have more impermeable surfaces than they used to - patios, paths, decks, driveways round the front - and all that surface water has to go somewhere. Directing it away from the house is essential, but so is not simply pushing it onto neighbouring properties. A properly designed garden includes soakaways, permeable surfaces, or drainage into surface water systems, and the details of that drainage should be discussed at design stage rather than discovered when water pools in the wrong place after the first heavy rain.

Structural planting - hedges, mature shrubs, small trees - are what carry the design through winter and give it structure in every season. A garden built entirely on annual bedding and herbaceous perennials is spectacular in July and empty in January. A garden with a strong backbone of evergreens, structural shrubs and considered small trees looks intentional in every month of the year. Investing in a few well-chosen structural plants at maturity, rather than smaller specimens that will take a decade to develop, transforms how quickly the garden reads as finished.

Lawn is the item most gardens over-provide. A large expanse of lawn requires mowing, edging, feeding, aeration and often reseeding to keep looking good, and much of it is rarely used. Many Bournemouth gardens would work better with a smaller, more central lawn area and more of the remaining space given over to planting, seating and paths. The lawn is then a design feature that gets attention, rather than a maintenance burden that spans the whole plot.

The routes through the garden deserve as much thought as the destinations. A garden with poorly-thought paths - or no paths where paths are needed - ends up with worn lines across the lawn where people walk, muddy patches at gates, and areas that are inaccessible in winter without wellies. Plan the routes people will actually take and pave them properly. A garden with clear circulation feels welcoming; a garden without it feels awkward.

Lighting extends the season and the daily use of the garden. Low-voltage garden lighting is not the significant undertaking it used to be - modern systems with plug-in transformers and LED fittings are within the reach of most budgets. Even a modest lighting scheme, illuminating the main path, the seating area, and one or two feature plants, transforms the garden after dark and makes it visible from inside the house in winter evenings.

Any landscaping team in Bournemouth will bring these considerations to a project, but a homeowner who has thought about them before the first design meeting gets a garden that fits their actual life rather than an idealised one. The gardens that end up loved are the ones designed for how they will be used, not just how they will look.class=
